In 1985 UNESCO marked a milestone in the scene of information processing with the launching of the CDS/ISIS software for personal computers. CDS/ISIS soon became one of the most widely used tools for information organization and retrieval, especially in developing countries.
CDS/ISIS made and continues to make a substantial impact in different ways:
- Initiating the process of automatization in thousands of libraries with the creation of bibliographical data bases with affordable costs.
- Fostering, and in many cases, initiating, information literacy by means of the development of new capacities and abilities in information professionals.
- Favouring the development of an important community of practice at international level, in the use of the program and the development of new applications.
- Fostering collaborative work between professionals of computer science and library and information workers.
- Facilitating the networking and sharing of information at national, regional and international levels.
