Africa sub-Regional HIV and AIDS
Skill Building Workshop
Taj Pamodzi Hotel - Lusaka, Zambia: 23 – 27 April, 2007
As indicated in the concept note of the Africa Sub-regional HIV and
AIDS skills building workshops, UNESCO aims to support Member States
to move towards universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention
programmes, treatment, care and support in line with the UNAIDS
division of labour in the context of Education for All (EFA) and the
newly revised UNESCO strategy on HIV and AIDS.
EDUCAIDS is a means to support comprehensive education sector
responses to HIV and AIDS and to ensure that the education sector is
engaged in and contributing to national HIV and AIDS responses. The
Africa sub-regional HIV and AIDS workshops - organized jointly by
the Section on HIV and AIDS in UNESCO Headquarters, the UNESCO
Office in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for
Education (BREDA) Dakar, Senegal - offer an important opportunity to
strengthen the capacity of UNESCO and education sector partners to
implement EDUCAIDS.
The Lusaka sub-regional Anglo-phone workshop (23 – 27 April, 2007)
was held against the backdrop of the broad approach of implementing
a series of workshops as steps in continuing and deepening strategic
action on education and HIV and AIDS. It presented an opportunity to
identify country-specific follow-up actions from participants from
UNESCO BREDA, ROSTA, IICBA, UNESCO Windhoek, UNESCO Paris, UNESCO
Dar es Salaam, UNESCO Harare, UNESCO Maputo, UNESCO Bamako,
Swaziland National Commission for UNESCO, Civil societies in the
above countries as well as Ministries of education and UN agencies.
Using the Harare Cluster Office HIV and AIDS Education Training
Module and publications from the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT)
on Education relating to Quality Education and HIV and AIDS and
Treatment Education, the participatory run workshop, officially
opened by the Minister of Education in Zambia, Hon. G. Lungwanga
achieved its objectives in improving the capacity, skills and
teamwork among UNESCO and its partners in the HIV and AIDS response,
reviewing and further developing analyses of comprehensive national
education sector responses to HIV and AIDS and identifying and
prioritizing follow-up actions to address needs as well as
refreshing and further developing participants’ skills in particular
thematic areas relevant to universal access, including prevention
education and treatment education.
The exchange of information, experiences, lessons and future plans,
updates on EDUCAIDS; other relevant thematic work such as TTISSA,
LIFE, FRESH, the joint initiative on life skills for Eastern and
Southern Africa; and links to other UNESCO sectors such as culture
and social and human sciences, discussions of the World AIDS
Conference in Toronto in mid-2006; input on specific relevant
technical areas, including prevention education and treatment
education; participation of people living with HIV who are engaged
in education sector responses and the reflection of country
delegations and development of specific follow-up action plans
enabled the week long workshop to come up with concrete plans for
future action.
The evaluation exercise at the end of the workshop revealed that
participants were indeed eager to learn from each other and share
information at the workshop. The sessions on Treatment Education as
well as that of sharing of good practices were very well received.
There was a generally improved understanding of EDUCAIDS and
participants’ desire to use it in their various contexts. This
experience will certainly present lessons for the forthcoming
Lusophone and Francophone workshops being held in the same context.
